I have been a fan or the Norrbotten big band for a long time and am familiar with some of the projects they have done with different artists but I had never listened to Lina Nyberg, and after hearing what a big name Jazz vocalist she is in Sweden I was very excited for this show. I decided to go into this concert blind without doing any research to see what would happen and I was not disappointed. Combining her normal rhythm section with the Norrbotten horn sections, they played one tune together and then Lina Nyberg came out. I was previously aware that Sweden has a very large market for Free Jazz and have listened to a few artists of that style and once I realized and saw she was a Free Jazz vocalist I became very intrigued with the fact that she was playing with a big band. Performing mostly her original compositions arranged by either herself or a college, the music combined the warmth of a big band with the flowing melodies of her compositions and free improvisation. In regards to her compositions, Lina has a good ear for creating complex yet flowing beautiful melodies. This put together with the open free improvised sections of the tunes provided an environment of much tension and release that made the performance a very unique and enjoyable experience. I will definitely be looking into hearing some more of her music.
